Farewell gifts for a teacher who is leaving the school
Twenty ideas for a teacher moving schools, moving away or going on leave: words from the class, something for the next chapter, and what to write. With 2026 rules and dates.

The news often comes late. A line in the newsletter, or a quiet word at pick-up: your child's teacher will not be back next year. They are moving schools, or moving away, or starting something new, and the last day is only weeks off.
A farewell gift for a teacher who is leaving has a job an end-of-year gift does not. It has to travel. The best ones tell the teacher what they meant here, in words they can keep, and go with them to whatever comes next.
What is a good farewell gift for a teacher who is leaving?
- One gift from the whole class. It is fairer on families, and simpler under school gift rules.
- Words first. Letters, a card with a line from every child, or a film of messages. These are what teachers keep.
- Then something for the next chapter. Books or a painted door sign for the new classroom, or a voucher for a café near the new school.
- Skip the novelty "teacher" gifts. A mug that says "teacher" could come from any class. A line from each child could only come from this one.
What can the class give in its own words?
1. A film from the class, and anyone else they taught. Each child records a short goodbye on a parent's phone, at home, in their own words. Past students and families who have moved on can join from the same link, wherever they live now. Warmcut puts the messages in order with music and captions, and nobody edits anything. Collecting messages and watching the finished film is free, with a small Warmcut watermark. Pay once, from US$19, to share and download it. A class is usually more than 10 people: the free film uses the first 10 to record, and paying makes it with everyone. It suits a teacher who is moving away: a card stays in a drawer, but a film can be watched on a phone in the first hard week at a new school.
2. A book of letters. One page from each child, collected in a display folder or bound at a print shop. Younger children can draw and dictate a sentence to a parent. Ask for one memory, not a list of adjectives.
3. A card with a line from every child. Not just names: "Thank you for…" is enough. It is the quickest idea here, and it still works when you hear the news with days to spare.
4. Drawings, framed together. Ask each child to draw one thing from the year: the class pet, the excursion, the reading corner. Twenty-five small drawings in one frame can hang at home, or in the next classroom.
5. Letters from the parents. Parents see a different part of the work: the phone call after a bad week, the reader that came home with a note in it every Friday. A page from the families says what children cannot.
6. Messages from past students. If they have taught at the school for years, the steps for reaching former students work for a teacher who is leaving too.
7. Advice for their next class. Each child writes one thing the next class should know about their teacher. For example: "She always notices when someone is sad." It is a thank-you in disguise, and it is easy for even the youngest children to answer. Put the pages in an envelope addressed to "My next class", so the teacher can read them on the first morning, or keep them.

What can go with them to the new school?
8. Books for their next classroom. A few picture books or novels, each with a bookplate: "From your class at [school], 2026." A new class will read them, and the teacher will know where they came from.
9. A door sign for the new classroom, painted by the class. A blank wooden sign from a craft shop, with the teacher's name painted on and every child adding one small mark: a star, a dot, their initial. It can go on the door of the new room from the first day.
10. A voucher for a café near the new school. Small, local, and used in the first week, when everything else is new. A voucher for one café counts as a gift card, so check your state's rule first.
11. Stamped postcards addressed to the school. Three or four of them, so the teacher can send the class a line from the new place next term. The children get something back.
12. A class photo, signed. Print the official class photo large, in a card mount, and have every child sign the mount. Use the school photo rather than phone snaps that show other people's children.
13. Something small from here. For a move interstate or overseas: a box of treats from a local bakery or market, chosen because it is light to pack and tastes of the town they are leaving.

What can you give that costs little or nothing?
14. A thank-you in the school newsletter. A few lines from the class in the last newsletter of the year, with the principal's OK. It reaches every family, and it thanks the teacher in front of the whole school community.
15. A guard of honour at the last bell. On the last afternoon, the class lines both sides of the path to the gate and claps the teacher out. Ask the school first. It needs no money, only five minutes.
16. Morning tea for the staffroom on their last day. It thanks the people around them too, and a modest morning tea is one of the simplest gifts for a school to accept.
17. A letter to the principal. A few lines about what the teacher did for your child, with the teacher copied in. It puts the thanks on the record before they leave.
18. Say it at the gate. On the last afternoon, tell them one specific thing in person. It takes thirty seconds, and nobody has to organise it.
What can colleagues give a teacher who is leaving?
19. A staffroom book or film. Colleagues see what parents never do: the swapped yard duty, the help in someone's first year, the calm in a hard meeting. Ask each person for one memory. A film can sit alongside the class one, or play at the staff farewell.
20. One shared gift for what comes next. A long lunch, a voucher for a hobby, or something for the new commute, from the whole staffroom.
Gifts between colleagues are usually treated separately from gifts from families. If the staff collection is large, check with the business manager.
Does the reason they are leaving change the gift?
Moving to another school
Lean towards the new classroom: books, the painted door sign, a café voucher near the new school.
Moving interstate or overseas
Choose something light, or nothing to pack at all. Letters scan well and a film travels on a phone. Add one small thing from here.
Going on parental leave
They may well be back. A picture book for the baby, with every child's name written inside the front cover in their own hand, is a good fit: something to read aloud in the months at home. Keep the tone "see you soon" rather than goodbye.
Leaving teaching
Do not ask why, and do not make the gift about the change. Thank them for the years they gave. Words matter most here.
Retiring
A long career deserves its own list. See retirement gifts for a teacher.
Leaving mid-year
There may only be a week. A card with a line from every child, or a short film, can be done in that time. Small and on time beats big and late.
How much should the class spend, and what do the rules allow?
A class gift is judged on its total, not on each family's share. Keep the total small, make contributions optional, and put every child's name on the gift, whether their family paid or not.
For government schools, as at October 2026:
- NSW: gifts worth more than $50 must be reported, "regardless of the number of contributors".
- Victoria: thank-you gifts from families worth $100 or less in total do not need to be declared.
- Everywhere: no cash, and no prepaid Visa or Mastercard cards.
Until their last day, a teacher is still a department employee, so a goodbye gift from families counts like any other. The teacher gift rules by state cover every state and territory. Catholic and independent schools set their own rules. In Canada and the US, the school board or district does, so ask the office. If you are the one collecting, the class rep guide has a message you can copy for the group chat.
When should you send the link?
If your teacher is leaving at the end of the year, the farewell falls in the last week of Term 4. Start organising four weeks before the last day and send the recording link two weeks before it. At government schools in 2026, that means sending it by Thursday 26 November in the NT, Friday 27 November in Queensland and South Australia, Thursday 3 December in NSW and WA, and Friday 4 December in Victoria, Tasmania and the ACT. The full table of 2026 last days is in our teacher retirement guide. Catholic and independent schools, and Tasmanian colleges, set their own dates, so check your school's calendar.
Give the class gift on the children's last day, even where teachers work a few days longer. Two weeks lets families who check the group chat once a week join in. If the news comes later, a week is enough for a card and a film.
What do you write to a teacher who is leaving?
One true, specific thing says more than a page of careful words. A few to start from:
- "Thank you for helping [child] love reading. Your new class is lucky to have you."
- "[Child] still talks about the day you [memory]. We will remember it too."
- "We hope the new place feels like home quickly. There will always be a class here that remembers you."
- "Thank you for this year. We cannot wait to hear about the baby."
- "Whatever comes next, thank you for the years you gave this school."
- From a colleague: "Thank you for the help in my first year. I still use your advice every week."
The thank-you message ideas for a teacher have more lines from children and parents. If the class would rather say it out loud, the farewell film page shows how one link collects every message.
Questions
What do you give a teacher who is leaving the school?
Something from the whole class that they can keep, plus something for where they are going. A book of letters or a film of messages, then books or a painted door sign for the new classroom. One shared gift is fairer on families and simpler under school gift rules.
How much should a class spend on a leaving gift for a teacher?
Keep the total small, because the class total counts, not each family's share. In NSW, gifts over $50 must be reported; in Victoria, family gifts up to $100 need no declaration. Make contributions optional and put every child's name on the gift.
Can teachers accept farewell gifts from parents?
Yes, small ones. A government school teacher is covered by their state's gift rules until their last day: never cash or prepaid cards, and bigger gifts may need reporting. Gifts from colleagues are usually treated separately.
Should you give a gift if a teacher leaves mid-year?
Yes, if you would like to. A card with a line from every child, or a short film of messages, can be done in a week. Small and on time beats big and late.
What do you write in a card for a teacher who is leaving?
One specific memory and one wish. For example: “Thank you for helping Sam love reading. We will miss seeing you at the gate.” A true, specific line says more than a long one.
