Unique gift shops in Melbourne locals love, grouped by who the gift is for

Fourteen independent shops and one weekend market across Melbourne, with what to buy at each, a price guide, and which ones you can walk between.

A tram runs along a tree-lined Melbourne city street, with Christmas decorations strung over the road and a heritage tower behind

Saturday in Fitzroy. The makers at the Rose Street market have their tables up by ten, and between their stalls and the shops on Brunswick and Smith Streets you can get through half a Christmas list before lunch.

Melbourne does this kind of shopping well: small rooms run by people who make the stock, or who know the person who did. Here are 14 unique gift shops in Melbourne, plus one weekend market, that locals return to, in the city, the inner north, the south and south-east, and the west, grouped by the person you are buying for. Shopping in both cities? Our guide to independent gift shops in Sydney works the same way.

What makes a shop make this list?

Three tests. The shop is independent, with a street address you can walk into: no chains or department stores, no souvenir shops, nothing online-only. It sells things worth giving, often made in small batches or by named makers. And its own site showed it trading when we checked on 6 November 2026: opening hours, newly added stock, or an event with a date on it. Nobody paid to be here, and Warmcut has no arrangement with any shop on the list.

The dollar signs are a rough price guide: $ for mostly under $40, $$ for roughly $40 to $150, $$$ for above that.

In the city, Books for Cooks is a short walk north to the market; check its hours before you go. The north-side shops are a tram ride apart rather than a walk, and The Sun Bookshop in Yarraville is worth a trip of its own. Bring a jacket, whatever the forecast says.

Is there a gift you can't buy in a shop?

Yes, and it pairs well with anything on this list. When a group wants to give something together, a family, a staff room or a footy team, each person films a short video message on their phone using the same link; nobody needs an app or an account. Warmcut joins the clips into a single film and adds music and captions. It costs nothing to collect the messages and watch the film, which carries a small Warmcut watermark. Sharing and downloading it is a one-off payment, from US$19. With more than 10 people, the free version includes the first 10 who record, and paying adds everyone else. If several of you are splitting the cost of a bigger present, these group gift ideas help.

Check before you set out

We copied these hours from the shops' own sites, as at November 2026. They shift, most of all in December, when some shops stay open later and others take a break once Christmas is over. Thinkers & Makers and Mr Kitly keep short weeks, so check those two first. A quick look at the site, or a phone call, saves a wasted tram ride.
