What to write in a 50th birthday message
One thing from the years you have known them, what it says about them now, and a wish for their fifties. The shape, then 50 lines you can adapt.

At a fiftieth, there is usually a moment when the glasses go up and everyone looks around for someone to say something. Most people manage "Happy birthday" and a sip. Then, on the drive home, they think of what they meant to say: the year she moved in next door, or the morning he turned up with a trailer before anyone asked.
A 50th birthday message is your second go at that moment.
Here is what to write in a 50th birthday message: one thing from the part of their life you were there for, what it shows about who they have become, and a wish for their fifties. Two to four sentences: enough to fill a card, and about right for a minute of video. Below: that shape, 50 lines (by relationship, plus short ones for a crowded card) and what to say on camera.
What do you write in a 50th birthday message?
Fifty years holds a lot of chapters, and you were probably there for one or two of them. That is your material.
- Your chapter. Where you come in: the netball club, the uni corridor, the school gate, twenty years of Sunday phone calls.
- Then and now. Something you noticed back then that is still true, or something that has grown.
- A wish for their fifties. One they could actually picture.
Put together:
"We met at nineteen, both hopeless at the Saturday job at the bakery. You always stayed back to help me close up, and thirty-one years later you're still first to grab a tea towel at any party. I hope your fifties give some of that back to you."
The wish is on firmer ground than you might think. In a 2020 study of 132 countries, economist David Blanchflower found that wellbeing tends to bottom out in the late forties, at around 47 or 48, and climb from there. "I think your fifties will be good to you" is kind. It may also be true.
For when to be funny and when to be heartfelt, there is a table in what to say in a birthday message, with lines for every age.
50th birthday messages for a husband, wife or partner
- "I've known you at twenty-five, thirty-five and forty-five. Fifty might be my favourite version yet."
- "You still laugh at the same bit of the same film every single time. I hope I'm next to you for it at eighty."
- "Half your life ago, you said yes to [the flat with the broken heater]. Best decision I was ever part of."
- "You've known how I take my tea since our second date. Happy 50th, love."
- "Happy 50th to the person who makes our house feel like home, even on the loud days."
50th birthday messages for Mum or Dad, from the kids
- "Now that I'm the one packing lunches, I finally see how much you did before eight o'clock every morning."
- "Fifty, and still the person I ring when the car makes a strange noise."
- "Happy 50th, Dad. You are embarrassing in exactly the right amount."
- "Everything I know about [standing up for people], I learnt by watching you."
- "You were younger than I am now when you became my parent. I think about that a lot. Thank you."
Younger children do best with one thing they love doing with you, said their way. Let them say it, then stop recording.
What does a parent say on their child's 50th?
It is a strange birthday for a parent. Your child is suddenly middle-aged, and you remember the day they arrived as if it was last week.

- "Fifty years ago today I held you for the first time. I'm as proud now as I was then. I just have more reasons."
- "You grew into a parent, a good friend and the one everyone calls in a crisis. None of it surprised me."
- "You were the most stubborn toddler in the street. It's still one of your best qualities."
- "Thank you for the Sunday calls, the lifts to appointments and never once making it feel like a favour."
- "Happy 50th, love. However old you get, you're still my baby. Sorry, that's the rule."
50th birthday messages for a sibling or best friend
For a sister or brother
- "We fought over the front seat for a decade. I'd give it to you every time now."
- "You told me how everything really worked, from high school to mortgages. Being the eldest suits you."
- "Nobody else remembers [the caravan holidays] the way we do. I'm glad I've got you to remember them with."
- "Two steps behind you all my life, and still catching up. Thanks for checking the path first."
- "Happy 50th. You're still the only one allowed to tell Mum what really happened in 1989."
For a best friend
- "We met at [nineteen] and thought fifty was ancient. Turns out it's just us, with better wine."
- "You've helped me move house five times. Nobody does that for just anyone."
- "When things fell apart in [year], you turned up with dinner and stayed. I've never forgotten it."
- "Here's to our fifties: louder laughs, earlier nights and no more pretending to like camping."
- "Every good story from my twenties has you in it. I'm counting on you for my sixties too."
50th birthday messages for a colleague or boss
Leave age jokes and private stories out of a work card. These are safe for any office:
- "Happy 50th, [name]. Thanks for being the calm voice on the worst day of every quarter."
- "Twenty years in this job and you still explain things to new starters as if it's the first time anyone asked."
- "When I was new and unsure, you stood up for me. I've never forgotten it. Happy 50th."
- "The whole team says happy fiftieth. Cake's in the kitchen, and the 3pm is cancelled."
- "Fifty looks like a good age to finally take that long weekend. We'll hold things together."
Short 50th birthday wishes for the card
For when there is only room for one line:
- "Happy 50th. Here's to the decade you've been working up to."
- "Fifty years of you. Lucky us."
- "Fifty, and still the person I'd pick for a long drive."
- "Here's to fifty, and to everyone who helped you get here."
- "May your fifties be full of long lunches and short meetings."
- "Happy 50th. Thank you for being exactly yourself, all this time."
- "Half a century, and you can still surprise us."
- "To fifty: you earned every candle."
- "Happy 50th. The best years are not behind you."
- "Fifty suits you. It was always going to."
- "Here's to quiet Sundays and loud birthdays."
- "Happy fiftieth. I'm so glad I know you."
- "Fifty years of good stories, and room for plenty more."
- "Happy 50th from all of us who are lucky to know you."
- "Fifty candles, one wish: more of you."
If they dread the number
Not everyone wants fifty mentioned. These lines leave it out:
- "Happy birthday. Ignore the candles and enjoy the cake."
- "Happy birthday to the person who makes every year better."
- "No numbers here. Just thank you, and happy birthday."
- "Here's to the year ahead, whatever it brings. I'll be there for it."
- "Happy birthday. Today you don't have to organise a thing."
What should you say in a 50th birthday video message?
In a film from everyone, your clip sits next to people from every other decade of their life. Aim for under a minute. Three things help yours land:
- Tell the story only your years have. The school friend has the Year 12 formal. The workmate has the conference in Cairns. If everyone brings their own chapter, the film covers fifty years without anyone planning it.
- Add one photo from then. You can add photos with your clip. One picture from your years with them gives your minute a place and a time.
- Leave the number to the cake. Most clips will say "happy 50th". Say it once and spend the rest of your minute on them.
The recording basics (light, sound, how many takes) are in recording a video message on your phone. If you're organising it, the 50th birthday film page shows the prompts people record to, and Warmcut puts every clip into one film, ordered like a story, with music and captions. Collecting messages and watching the finished film is free, with a small Warmcut watermark. Pay once, from US$19, to share and download it. Over 10 people? The free film uses the first 10 to record, and paying makes it with everyone. Planning it as a surprise? These tips on keeping a group video secret help.
What should a 50th birthday message avoid?
- Menopause and health jokes. The average age of natural menopause is 51, and in Australia perimenopause usually starts at around 47, according to Jean Hailes for Women's Health. For many women, fifty is the middle of it. Unless she jokes about it first, leave it alone.
- "You don't look fifty." It is meant kindly, but it suggests fifty is something to hide.
- Midlife-crisis jokes. The sports car, the motorbike, the new hobby. They tease someone for wanting something new just when they might finally have time for it.
- Where they "should" be by now. No comparisons about houses, jobs, marriages or retirement plans.
One true line from your chapter of their life is the part they will keep.
Questions
What do you write in a 50th birthday card?
One thing from the years you have known them, what it says about them today, and a wish for their fifties. A few sentences is enough. For example: "Thirty years since the bakery, and you're still first to grab a tea towel. I hope your fifties give some of that back."
What is a good short 50th birthday message?
One line that sounds like you: "Happy 50th. Here's to the decade you've been working up to." Or: "Half a century, and you can still surprise us." In a crowded card, one specific line beats a long general one.
What do grown-up kids write in a parent's 50th card?
Something you only understand now that you are older: how much they did before work, or how young they were when they started. Then thank them. "You were younger than I am now when you became my parent. Thank you" lands harder than a long poem.
Is it OK to joke about someone turning 50?
Yes, when it is about something you lived through together and they enjoy a laugh at their own expense. Skip jokes about decline, looks, health and menopause, and keep work cards free of age jokes. Start light if you like, but finish on something you mean.
What do you say to someone who does not want a fuss about turning 50?
Leave the number out and keep it low-key: a text in the morning or a card at breakfast. "Happy birthday. Ignore the candles and enjoy the cake" marks the day without making them the centre of a room.
