Kinder graduation gift ideas for the step to big school
Twenty ideas for the child finishing kinder, kindy or preschool this year, many of them free, plus words for the card and what each state calls the year.

On the last day of kinder, the bag comes home heavier. There is a folder of paintings, a hat with a cardboard tassel, and a certificate with their name on it, spelled the way they can now spell it themselves. Somewhere in the car park, a parent who said they would not cry is looking for their sunglasses.
It is a small graduation and a big step. The best kinder graduation gift ideas are simple: something for the move to big school, something that keeps this year, or words from the people who love them. Here are 20, many of them free, with what to write in the card. Whether your child's centre calls it kinder, kindy or preschool, the ideas are the same.
In NSW and the ACT, Kindergarten is the first year of school, so a Kindergarten graduation there marks the end of that year, not the step into it. The big-school ideas suit the year before; everything else works for either. The table near the end shows what each state calls both years.
This list is for the child. If you are thanking the educators, see gifts for daycare and kinder teachers.
What gift will a kinder graduate remember?
At four or five, most presents are soon forgotten. Words from the people who love them can be kept, read again and watched again. These gifts are for the child now, and for the person they will be in ten years.
1. A film of messages from the family. Grandparents, aunties, the cousin overseas, the neighbour who waved every morning: each records a minute on their phone, talking to the child about what they are proud of. Warmcut puts the messages in order and adds music and captions. You send one link, two weeks before graduation day; nobody needs an app and nobody edits. It suits a family that cannot all fit in the kinder hall, or lives too far away to come. A child who cannot read a card yet can still watch Pop say their name, and the film keeps for the day they are old enough to understand what everyone said. Collecting messages and watching the finished film is free, with a small Warmcut watermark. Pay once, from US$19, to share and download it. Over 10 people? The free film uses the first 10 to record, and paying makes it with everyone.
2. A letter to open later. Write about who they are right now: the song they ask for in the car, the friend they talk about at dinner, the way they say "spaghetti". Seal it and write an opening date on the envelope. A child who finishes kinder in 2026 will finish primary school in 2033 and Year 12 in 2039. Pick one of those dates, or write a letter for each. The Year 12 letter can sit alongside whatever Year 12 graduation gift the family gives then.
3. The last-day-of-kinder interview. Ask the same few questions on video or on paper. What is your favourite food? Who is your best friend? What was the best thing about kinder? What do you want to be when you grow up? Then ask again on the last day of every school year. Thirteen sets of answers later, you have them growing up in their own words.
4. A book about starting school, signed inside. Choose a picture book about the first day of school and ask family to write a line on the inside cover. Read it together a few times over the summer holidays.
5. Notes in the lunchbox. For the first weeks of school, tuck a small note into their lunchbox: a drawing, a heart, three words. Few children can read much when they start school, so pictures work best. Keep a couple of the drawings for yourself.
What helps a child get ready for big school?
Practical gifts suit this age, because the child knows exactly what they are for. Check the school's list before you buy. Many schools have their own bag, hat or stationery pack.
6. Their first school bag, chosen by them. If the school does not sell its own, let them pick the colour. Make sure it fits a lunchbox, a drink bottle and a library book.
7. A lunchbox and drink bottle they can open themselves. Practise over summer. A lid a small child can manage is worth more than the nicest pattern.
8. Name labels for everything. Iron-on labels for clothes, stickers for the rest. Hats and jumpers wander in the first weeks of school, and the labelled ones tend to come home.
9. A soft toy that waits at home. Something to say goodbye to in the morning and hello to at pick-up. Graduation teddies with a little cap are easy to find, but any new friend will do.
10. A library card in their own name. Take them to join the local library and let them borrow their first books on a card that is theirs.

What from the kinder year is worth keeping?
Kinder sends a lot home in the last week. A few pieces are worth keeping properly.

11. One painting, framed properly. Choose one piece of kinder art together and put it in a real frame, with the date on the back. One framed painting gets looked at more than a folder of fifty.
12. A photo book of the year, in their words. Choose a few photos from the year and ask your child what is happening in each one. Write their words underneath, exactly as they said them. Leave out other children's faces unless their families agree.
13. A memory box. A sturdy box for the certificate, the cardboard graduation hat, the name tag, the portfolio if your kinder sends one home, and the first drawing of the whole family.
14. A height mark on the door frame. Mark it on graduation day, with the date. Add one on the first day of every school year after that.
15. Something to plant together. A row of sunflowers, or a fruit tree in the backyard or a big pot. It grows as they do, and watering it can be their job.
What can you do together over the summer holidays?
In Australia, kinder ends a week or two before Christmas, and the long summer holidays start. Time is often the gift that fits best.
16. A graduation day out. One child, one grown-up, their choice: the zoo, the beach, the playground with the big slide, a babycino. With brothers and sisters around, a whole day of one person's attention is rare.
17. A walk past the new school. Walk or drive the route over the holidays, and play in the school playground if it is open. A strange place becomes a familiar one before the first day.
18. Swimming lessons. A block of lessons over summer is a practical gift for an Australian child, and one that lasts.
19. They choose graduation dinner. Whatever they pick, write the menu on a card and put it in the memory box.
What can you give kinder friends and classmates?
Some families like to give the whole group something on the last day. Keep it tiny and the same for everyone.
20. A small card for every child. A card with a drawing your child made, signed with their name in their own writing. Add bubbles, a seed packet or a bookmark if you like. Ask the kinder first about food, lollies and allergies, and before sharing any photo of other children.
What to write in a kinder graduation card
Most children finishing kinder cannot read a card yet. Read it to them, then keep it. In a few years they will read it themselves. Keep it short: one thing they learnt this year and one thing you are looking forward to.
From parents:
- "You walked into kinder holding my hand. Now you are ready for big school. We are so proud of you."
- "This year you learnt to write your name, ride the big bike and say goodbye at the door. Big school is lucky to get you."
- "Whatever happens next year, we will be at the gate at pick-up."
From grandparents:
- "Nanna and Pop are so proud of you. Please save us a painting from big school."
- "We remember the day you were born. Look at you now, a kinder graduate."
From a big brother or sister:
- "Welcome to big school. I will show you where the bubblers are."
To open later:
- "Dear [name], today you finished kinder. You were four and three-quarters, you loved [thing], and your best friend was [name]. We hope you still laugh the way you did today."

What is kinder called in each state?
The year before school has a different name in each state, and in NSW and the ACT, Kindergarten is the first year of school itself.
| State | Year before school | First year of school |
|---|---|---|
| Victoria | Kinder | Prep |
| New South Wales | Preschool | Kindergarten |
| Queensland | Kindy | Prep |
| South Australia | Preschool | Reception |
| Western Australia | Kindergarten | Pre-primary |
| Tasmania | Kindergarten | Prep |
| ACT | Preschool | Kindergarten |
| Northern Territory | Preschool | Transition |
Graduations are usually held in the last week or two of term 4. In 2026, government schools finish between Thursday 10 December (NT) and Friday 18 December (Victoria, Tasmania and the ACT); kinders in long day care and non-government schools may differ, so check yours. If you are also organising a group gift for the educators, the class rep guide has a plan and messages you can copy. In Canada and the US, the same ideas work for a preschool or kindergarten graduation at the end of the school year.
What if you only have time for one thing?
Write down who they are this year: what they love, what they say, who they play with. Everything else on this list is a bonus. If the family is spread across towns or countries, a graduation film from everyone brings everyone into the room, even the ones who cannot be there.
Questions
Do you give gifts for kinder graduation?
It is not expected. Some families give a small gift; others mark the day with a card, a special dinner or a day out. Both are fine. A letter to keep, a book about starting school or time together suits a four- or five-year-old well.
What is a good kinder graduation gift for a boy or a girl?
The same ideas work for any child. Follow their interests rather than a pink or blue aisle: a book about starting school, a school bag in their favourite colour, a day out, or messages from family they can watch again.
What do you write in a kinder graduation card?
Keep it short: one thing they learnt this year and one thing you are looking forward to. For example: "This year you learnt to write your name and say goodbye at the door. Big school is lucky to get you." Read it to them, then keep it.
When is kinder graduation in 2026?
Usually in the last week or two of term 4. Government schools finish between Thursday 10 December (NT) and Friday 18 December 2026 (Victoria, Tasmania and the ACT). Kinders in long day care and non-government schools may differ, so check yours.
Is Kindergarten the same as kinder?
Not in every state. In Victoria, kinder is the year before school and Prep is the first year. In NSW and the ACT, Kindergarten is the first year of school, so a Kindergarten graduation there marks the end of that year. In WA and Tasmania, Kindergarten is the year before school, and Queensland says kindy.
