University graduation gifts for the day and the year after
Ideas for a new graduate, from the ceremony to the first job and the first lease, plus gifts that let family far away be part of the day.

The ceremony email arrives in late October. A Thursday afternoon in December, a hall in the city, and a short line near the bottom: up to three guest tickets. Mum and Dad are easy. Then there is Nan, the brother in Perth, the aunt who paid for the first laptop, and the flatmate who got them through second-year statistics.
A good university graduation gift does two jobs. It marks the degree on the day, and it helps with what comes straight after: the first job, the first lease, often a new city. The best ones also make room for the people who cannot fit in the hall. Here are 20 ideas from parents, grandparents, friends and family far away, with the 2026 ceremony dates and a few lines for the card.
Which university graduation gifts mark the day?
The day itself is short: a borrowed gown, a walk across a stage, photos on the lawn. These gifts make it last.
1. A film with everyone who could not fit in the hall. Nan, the brother in Perth, the aunt with the laptop, the old flatmate, the tutor who wrote the reference. Each person records about a minute on their phone from one link, with no app and no account. Warmcut trims the pauses, levels every voice and puts the messages in story order with music and captions, so nobody edits anything. Send the link about two weeks before the ceremony and play the film at dinner that night. Collecting messages and watching the finished film is free, with a small Warmcut watermark. Pay once, from US$19, to share and download it. Over 10 people? The free film uses the first 10 to record, and paying makes it with everyone. If you want it kept secret until the night, these tips for collecting video messages in secret help.
2. The graduation fee and gown hire. Many universities charge a fee to attend. At UNSW Sydney, as at October 2026, it is $250, and it covers gown hire, up to three guest tickets, a digital stage photo and the livestream. Paying it is unglamorous, and very welcome in a month when money is tight. Check what their own university charges.
3. Flowers that last past the day. A posy of Australian natives (banksia, kangaroo paw, a few gum leaves) holds up through a long afternoon of photos better than roses do. Banksias dry well, so one stem can sit on a shelf for years.

4. A proper frame for the testamur. The testamur is the degree certificate itself: the page with their name and the university seal. Have it framed with a conservation mount and UV-protective glass, so it does not fade on a sunny wall. If the testamur is handed over on the day, give a framing voucher and a card that says where it will hang.
When are university graduation ceremonies in 2026?
Many Australian universities hold ceremonies two or three times a year, often with one round in December and another in autumn or mid-year. Each graduate is given a date based on when they finished. These 2026 dates were checked on the universities' own pages on 30 October 2026.
| University | 2026 ceremony rounds |
|---|---|
| UNSW Sydney | March, August, and 30 November to 5 December |
| University of Queensland | July, and 10 to 19 December |
| University of Sydney | April to May, October, and December |
Two things follow from this.
- The ceremony can come months after the work ends. At the University of Sydney, the April to May 2026 ceremonies were for students who had finished by mid-February. By then, some had already started work. So split the gift: practical things when they need them, the keepsake on the day.
- Seats are limited. UNSW gives each graduate up to three guest tickets, does not sell extra ones, and livestreams every ceremony. Plan early for the people who will watch from home (ideas 14 to 16).
In the US and Canada, college graduations usually fall in May and June, and every idea here travels, apart from the transport cards.
What do you give a graduate starting their first job?
5. The commute, paid for the first month. Load their Opal, myki or go card, or cover the parking. It is a small, daily kind of help in the weeks before the first full pay arrives.
6. One good outfit, altered to fit. Take them shopping for one jacket, pair of trousers or dress that works for interviews and the first week, and pay for the alterations. A good fit does more than a new label.
7. A year of professional membership. Engineers, accountants, psychologists, planners: many professions have a body with a graduate rate. Membership brings events, mentoring and the industry news, and it reads well on a CV. Ask which body their field uses.
8. Dinner the night the offer comes. Not every graduate walks straight into a job. In the 2025 national Graduate Outcomes Survey, 75.4% of undergraduates who were available for full-time work had a full-time job four to six months after finishing. That leaves about one in four still looking. A card that says "dinner is on us the night the offer comes, wherever you choose" is something to look forward to, and it does not assume the offer has come yet.
9. An hour on the first payslip. Sit down together with the first payslip and check the tax, the super and the hours. Then set up a simple budget. The government's free Moneysmart site has a budget planner to start from. It costs nothing but an evening.
What helps a graduate moving out or moving for work?
The first job often means the first lease, and sometimes a new city.

10. A share of the bond. On a first lease, the bond is often the biggest single payment of the move. Help with it takes the sharpest edge off the move.
11. Moving day, handled. Hire the van, bring two strong cousins and turn up with lunch. If the move is interstate, pay for the removalist or for getting the car there instead.
12. A real bed. After years on a student mattress, a proper mattress or bed base for the first place of their own is a gift they will feel every night. The share-house mattress has done its time.
13. Contents insurance for the first year. Nobody thinks about it until the laptop is gone. Pay the first year's premium and hand over the policy in a card.
What can family far away give a university graduate?
14. A watch party for the livestream. If the ceremony is streamed, set it up on the television at Nan's place, bring morning tea, and ring the graduate together as soon as the ceremony ends. For family overseas, check the time difference and send the link early.
15. The fare that puts someone in the seat. If one of the guest tickets is going to a grandparent who lives hours away, pay for their train or flight, and a hotel if it makes for a long day.
16. A parcel for the first Monday. Post it to arrive the day before they start work: coffee from their home town, the biscuits they grew up on, a card from everyone. It says home noticed.
What can friends give, and what suits a mature-age or postgraduate graduate?
17. Shout the study group. A dinner or a bar tab for the people who shared the library, the group assignments and the night before the last exam. The degree was partly theirs too.
18. Help with the bond clean. If they are leaving a student share house, turn up with gloves and a vacuum on the last weekend. It is the least glamorous gift on this list, and one of the most useful.
19. The thesis, bound. For an honours, masters or PhD graduate, have the thesis or major project bound in hardcover with their name on the spine. Order two: one for them and one for whoever read every draft.
20. The evenings back. A mature-age graduate who studied around work and family gave up a lot of nights. A cleaner for a month, or a few weeks of meals delivered, hands some of those hours back.
What should you write in a university graduation card?
Keep it to one moment from their degree and one wish for the next stage. Some lines to borrow:
- "The letters after your name are new. We have been proud of the person behind them for years."
- "Frame it, then go and use it."
- "First job, first lease, first payslip. Proud of all of it, and here if any of it goes sideways."
- "We could not all fit in the hall, so we put ourselves in here."
For more lines by relationship, see what to say in a graduation message. If they are finishing school rather than university, these gifts for Year 12 graduates fit better. And if everyone wants to say something, the graduation film page shows the questions people answer when they record.
Questions
What is a good university graduation gift?
Something that celebrates the degree and helps with what comes next. A framed testamur, native flowers or a film of messages from family and friends mark the day. The commute paid for a month, help with the bond or a year of professional membership make the first months of work easier.
When should you give a university graduation gift?
The keepsake on the ceremony day, or at dinner that night. The ceremony can come months after they finish, so practical gifts, like help with a bond or a work outfit, are often better given when they are needed.
How can family who cannot attend be part of a graduation?
Many ceremonies are livestreamed (UNSW streams every one), so family can watch together and ring straight after. They can also record a short message for a film the graduate watches that night. Guest tickets are limited at many universities, so plan for the people at home early.
How much should you spend on a university graduation gift?
Spend what feels comfortable; there is no rule. Several of the best ideas cost only time, like an evening on the first payslip or help on moving day. A card with one real line in it matters more than the price.
