Christmas gifts for family overseas: what to send, and when

Twenty ideas for family on the other side of the world, from gifts that skip the post to small ones worth sending, with 2026 post-by dates and call times.

It is a Sunday night in early December. The parcel for your mum in Manchester is half packed on the hall table: a tea towel with a map of home, a jar of honey you are not sure customs will like, a card the kids signed in three colours. Then you check the dates and see that the cheap way to the UK closed on Friday.

Distance turns a simple present into a small project. The best Christmas gift for family overseas arrives on time, gets through customs without a bill, and still feels like home. Usually that means posting something small and early, buying anything heavy in their country, and sending the rest by link.

Below are 20 ideas, then the 2026 post-by dates from Australia, the customs rules that catch people out, and the best times to call on Christmas Day.

Which Christmas gifts for family overseas skip the post?

No cut-off dates, no customs form, no parcel sitting in a depot on the other side of the world.

1. A film from everyone at home. The cousins, the neighbours, Nan, the dog barking in the background. Each person records about a minute on their phone, and Warmcut puts the messages into one film in story order, with music and captions. One link goes out by WhatsApp, text or email: no app, no account, and nobody edits anything. People overseas can record too, so a film for Mum in Manchester can include her sister in Auckland. There is no postal cut-off, so you can still start it in mid-December. Collecting messages and watching the finished film is free, with a small Warmcut watermark. Pay once, from US$19, to share and download it. Over 10 people? The free film uses the first 10 to record, and paying makes it with everyone.

2. A Christmas call with a plan. Book it like an appointment, at a time that suits both ends (the table further down helps). Give it a shape: everyone opens one present on camera, the kids show what they got, someone reads out the cracker jokes. Someone will still be on mute.

3. A meal or a box of baking from a shop in their town. Order online from a bakery, deli or restaurant near them, for delivery in the week before Christmas. It travels a few streets instead of halfway round the world, and there is nothing to clear at the border.

4. A photo book printed in their country. Choose a photo book service that prints and delivers where they live, and upload the year. It arrives in days, with no customs form.

5. The sound of home. A voice memo of the magpies at dawn, the cricket on the radio, the cicadas at dusk, the kids rehearsing for the school carols. Send it on Christmas morning. It costs nothing, and for someone who moved away it can mean more than anything in a box.

6. A gift card for a shop near them. Buy it in their country, so it works where they live. On its own it can feel thin, so add a note about what you hope they spend it on.

7. The paper from home. A digital subscription to your local paper, or the one from the town they grew up in. Small news (the new roundabout, the footy results, who bought the corner shop) is how people who left stay part of the place.

8. A donation in their name, from home. To the surf club, school appeal or food bank in your town, with a line in the card about why.

What light Australian gifts are worth posting?

If you do post something, choose flat, light and unbreakable. International postage is priced by weight, so every gram counts.

9. Printed photos of the year, with notes on the back. Ten prints fit in one envelope. For one framed print, see the photo with the story on the back.

10. The family recipe, in the cook's handwriting. The white Christmas slice, Pop's stuffing, the potato salad everyone asks for. A card weighs almost nothing, and they can make the dish in their own kitchen on Christmas Day. Post the recipe, not the food. Or gather them all into a family recipe book.

11. A tea towel or calendar from home. A local artist's print of your beach or suburb, or next year's calendar with every family birthday marked. Light, flat, and used every day.

12. A book from home. A novel by an Australian writer or, for grandchildren overseas, a picture book about Australian animals with a note inside about the birds outside Nan's window.

13. Art by an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander artist. A print, a scarf or a set of cards. Look for sellers that are members of the Indigenous Art Code, which sets out fair dealing with artists. Prints roll and scarves fold flat.

14. Something warm for their winter. It is summer here and below zero in Toronto. Wool socks, a beanie, a scarf: light to post, and useful the day they open it.

15. The kids' drawings, folded into the card. A drawing of Christmas at the beach, signed in crayon. It goes wherever the card goes.

Which long-distance gifts keep you close all year?

16. The same dish, two kitchens. Choose one dish both households will cook for Christmas, and send the recipe early so they can find the ingredients there. Cook it together on a video call one weekend in December, then again every year.

17. A standing call. The first Sunday of every month in 2027, written in a card and put in both calendars.

18. A shared family album. One online album the whole family adds to every week: the first swim of summer, the school concert, the new puppy. For grandparents overseas, it is the grandchildren growing up as it happens. More for them in Christmas gifts for grandparents.

19. A tablet bought where they live. For an older parent overseas who finds video calls hard: a simple tablet ordered from a shop in their country, then set up together over the phone with the family's photos and contacts. Buying it there also means not posting a device with a lithium battery.

20. Part of the flight home. A card with an amount from everyone towards next year's visit, or the dates you will fly to them. Nothing else on this list closes the distance.

When should you post Christmas gifts overseas in 2026?

The first international dates close in late November. These are Australia Post's last recommended sending dates for Christmas 2026 from metro areas, as at October 2026. Christmas Day is a Friday.

  • Economy Air parcels close on the card date where they still run. As at October 2026, they are suspended or not available to several countries, including China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Italy and Spain. Check yours before you pack.
  • From South Australia, Tasmania or the NT, add 2 business days for Express and 5 for Standard and Economy. Regional areas take longer.
  • International Courier runs until 15 December to many countries, from selected Post Offices only.
  • Standard takes 5 to 10 business days and Economy Air 15 or more, so the dates leave little room. Australia Post says they can change.

Will they pay customs on a Christmas gift?

Every parcel going overseas needs a customs declaration, and the person at the other end may have to pay tax before it is handed over. These rules are as at October 2026.

  • Mark it as a gift. List each item and its real value on the form.
  • The UK: gifts worth £39 or less come in without VAT. Above that, VAT is charged and the delivery company bills them before they get the parcel.
  • The US: a parcel worth up to US$100, sent from one person to another and marked as a gift, is normally accepted as a gift. Alcohol, tobacco and medicines cannot be sent from Australia to the US as gifts at all. US import rules have changed several times since August 2025, so check Australia Post's US page before you post.
  • Canada: a gift worth CA$60 or less, sent by family or friends, comes in free of duty and tax. Above that, duty and tax apply to the amount over CA$60. Alcohol and tobacco do not count as gifts.
  • Bought online and sent by the shop? For the UK and the US, that is not a gift at the border, even with a gift message, because gifts must go from one person to another. Tax applies the usual way.
  • Other countries set their own limits. Check the customs website for where it is going.

What not to post

  • Perfume, nail polish and aerosols. Australia Post will not carry them, within Australia or overseas.
  • Lithium batteries, unless they are fitted inside the device. Australia Post will not send them to Germany, Italy or Thailand at all.
  • Food, plants and seeds without checking first. Many countries restrict them, so check Australia Post's international post guide before you pack the biscuits.

What time should you call family overseas on Christmas Day?

Christmas morning in Melbourne is still Christmas Eve in London and New York. Times below are for Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Hobart in daylight saving. In Brisbane, take off one hour; in Adelaide, half an hour; in Perth, three hours.

A Boxing Day morning call reaches North America on Christmas afternoon.

If the call is part of lunch, prop a tablet at the end of the table so they sit with everyone, not on someone's phone out in the hallway.

What can you write in the card?

One true thing about them, and one about home, is enough. A few to start from:

  • "We still set a place for you at lunch. Next year, we want you in it."
  • "It's Christmas night here and your morning is just starting. We wanted to be the first thing you heard."
  • "The jacaranda out the front flowered again. You would have loved it."
  • "Nani, she lost her first tooth this week. She wanted you to be the first to see the gap."
  • "You weren't at the table, but you were in every story we told today."

If you want everyone at home in one message, here is how a group film comes together. And if a few people are slow to record, this is usually why, with a reminder you can copy.

Questions

What can I send family overseas for Christmas?

Light, flat things post best: printed photos, a handwritten family recipe, a tea towel or calendar from home, a book, wool socks for their winter. For anything heavy, order from a shop in their country. Gifts sent by link, like a film of messages or a booked call, need no postage at all.

When should I post Christmas gifts overseas from Australia in 2026?

As at October 2026, Australia Post's last dates for cards and letters run from 24 November (rest of the world) to 4 December (UK and Europe). Standard parcels close about a week later: 7 December for the US and India, 11 December for the UK. Express closes between 4 and 15 December, depending on the country.

Will my family overseas have to pay customs on a Christmas gift?

Sometimes. As at October 2026, UK gifts worth more than £39 attract VAT, paid before delivery. The US normally accepts parcels up to US$100 sent person to person as gifts. Mark it as a gift, list each item and its value honestly, and remember that a parcel sent by a shop is not a gift at the border.

What are good long-distance family Christmas ideas?

Book a Christmas call at a time that suits both ends, and give it a plan, like opening one present each on camera. Cook the same dish in two kitchens. Collect messages from everyone into one film. Then set up a shared album and a monthly call for the year ahead.

What time should I call family in the UK or US on Christmas Day?

From Sydney or Melbourne, London's Christmas morning starts at 8pm on Christmas Day. For New York or Toronto, call on Boxing Day morning, 7 to 9am, which is their Christmas afternoon. For Los Angeles or Vancouver, try Boxing Day between 8 and 10am.
